Things to do - Fascinating History...

Burgundy is full of ancient and historic towns, which are wonderful to visit.  Within their walls there are fascinating places to discover.  Here below are but just a few examples.

La Fosse Dionne 1 medium 1. Tonnerre - a Handsom 16th Century town with two fine churches and a huge 'hospice' (medival hospital) now used to hold markets.  A special feature is 'La Fosse Dionne', a natural deep blue pool within a round cloister at the foot of the mountain.

2. Noyers-sur-Serein - it is a true medieval town with fascinating houses both in the town and facing the river,  and still has it's original ramparts all nestling in the hollow of the hills.  You entre Noyers through a wonderful 16th Century Arch.  There is a handmade pottery, which are beautiful, and great value owned by a charmin English potter and his french wife.  After visiting their shop you can wander along the river and climb 300 steps to the top of the castle and see a wonderful view.

3. Two beautiful places, partly made famous, by well known films.  Firstly, Flavigny, where 'Chocolate' was filmed.  A rural classical medieval renaissance village with a very special chapel with Roman pillares dating from the age of Charlemagne (8th Century).  The world famous 'Anis de Flavigny' sweets are made by monks here and the village community run a wonderful restaurant (see restaurants).

Secondly, Abbaye de Fontenay, where 'Cyrano de Bergerac' was filmed.  This is now privately owned and incredibly beautiful (a UNESCO site) - only 15 minutes from the house and a real must!

These examples are amongst just a few of the wonderful places you can visit.  When you visit La Maison du Chateau there is a 'House Book', which has many more examples and descriptions of places you can visit e.g. Auxerre, Avallon, Semur-en-Auxois and Vezelay.
